Now, it has to be said that my work is
not G-rated in any way. I have always
pushed my photography right up to the
limit line; then I move that line and continue to push my work even further. I
want my photographs to be in your
face and to force you to feel something. The motto of my work is, “Love
it or hate it, just don’t only like it.” I
would hate to have someone say to
me, “Your work is pretty.” I would take
that as an insult.
I use my work
to ask people
why they are so
uncomfortable
with nudity and
sexuality.
I use my work to ask people why they
are so uncomfortable with nudity and
sexuality. Why is it that women can not
be seen as sexual beings the same way
that men are? Why is it not okay for a
woman to s ay, “Yes, I like sex and there
is nothing wrong with that”? In today’s
society, the minute a woman expresses
her sexuality openly, she is labelled as
a “slut” or a “whore” and then she is put
in a place that is somehow subhuman;
that she is worthless now.
or talked to growing up and how they
felt the need to hide who they really
were. Frankly, I think that’s bullshit. Our
sexuality is a major part of who we are
and no one has the right to tell anyone
that they have to suppress that part of
themselves. One’s sexuality isn’t something that anyone should be ashamed
of. It should be celebrated. If sexuality
could become a more commonplace
conversation, if it was something that
was talked about around the dinner table like any other topic, then maybe we
could do a better job of teaching the
next generation about things like rape
culture and finding acceptance of
sexual orientation. Anyone that points
a finger at someone else and tells them
that they’re wrong for being who they
are, needs to have the finger pointed
at themselves instead. That judgemental person is on the wrong side of
history just like anyone who is against
civil rights and equality is always on the
wrong side of history. But I digress.
I have had so many women come
