Illinois State became the Cinderella team in 2005, winning
the MVC Tournament at the No. 8 seed and being one of three
Valley schools to make it to postseason play. The Redbirds
lost to eventual NCAA Tournament Champion Baylor in the
first round of the NCAA Tourney while Missouri State won
the WNIT after storming through four home wins en route to
its first postseason title. At the Valley Tournament, Bradley,
Creighton, Missouri State and Evansville exited after day
one while UNI and Drake fell in the semis.

Top-seeded UNI made its second consecutive NCAA Touranment appearance after becoming just the fourth league team
to win back-to-back State Farm MVC Tournament titles. The
Panthers were the lone Valley representative in the NCAA
Tournament, nearly pulling off a first-round upset against
Michigan State. Five Valley teams earned post-season berths
(1 NCAA, 4 WNIT). Illinois State advanced to the semifinals
of the WNIT for the third straight season, marking the fifth
time in league history a Valley school has played in the WNIT
semifinals. Missouri State won 20+ games and earned backto-back postseasn bids for the first time since the 2005-06
season, when the Lady Bears earned nine consecutive
postseason bids. Wichita State returned to the postseason
WNIT for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Missouri State won four games in four days en route to its
third tournament title in four years. The Bears, the No. 7 seed,
were the lone Valley representative in the NCAA Tournament,
and they suffered a first-round loss to Purdue at the national
tournament. Including MSU, four schools represented the
league in postseason play as UNI, Drake and Indiana State
all played in the WNIT. The Panthers and Bulldogs suffered
first-round defeats, while the Sycamores fell in the second
round to Indiana. At the Valley Tournament, the Sycamores
were on pace to clinch their first Valley Tournament Title but
fell at the arms of the Bears in the championship game.

Drake won four games in four days en route to its State
Farm MVC Women’s Basketball Tournament Title. The
Bulldogs, as a No. 8 seed, matched Illinois State’s 200 5
tournament title in that the lowest-seeded team won the
title. Drake suffered a first-round loss to eventual national
champion Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Three schools represented the league in postseason
play as Southern Illinois and Illinois State played in the WNIT.
Both the Salukis and Redbirds advanced to the second round
of the postseason tournament.

Ninth-seeded Evansville became the lowest-seeded team
to claim the State Farm MVC Women’s Basketball Tournament
title, after an improbable postseason run and a last-second
shot to give the Purple Aces a 47-45 win over Creighton.
The Aces were the lone Valley representative in the NCAA
Tournament, suffering a first-round loss to Texas A&M. Two
other MVC schools -- Illinois State and Creighton -- made
postseason appearances in the WNIT. The Redbirds made
their deepest postseason run in program history, evenutally
falling victim to Kansas, 75-72, in the WNIT semifinals. Ironically, the Jays also lost to Kansas in the WNIT second-round,
following a first-round victory over UC Riverside.

Fifth-seeded UNI won its first-ever State Farm MVC
Championship title, earning its first berth to the NCAA
Tournament field of 64. The Panthers were the lone Valley
representative in the NCAA Tournament, suffering a firstround loss to Nebraska. The Valley matched a league-high
tying six teams earning post-season berths (1 NCAA, 3 WNIT,
2 WBI), which also occurred in 1999 (2 NCAA, 4 WNIT). Illinois State advanced to the semifinals of the WNIT, marking
the fourth time in league history a Valley school has played
in the WNIT semifinals. Missouri State won more than 20
games and earned its first postseason bid in four years.
The Lady Bears were also one of 17 NCAA Division I schools
to post a double-digit increase in total victories and their
12-win improvement from a 10-20 campaign in 2008-09
represented the seventh-best turnaround in the nation. Both
Bradley and Wichita State earned their first-ever postseason
wins in program history.

For the 10th time in league history, and the first time
since 2002, the MVC earned two bids to the NCAA Tournament. Wichita State, which earned the Valley’s automatic
bid after winning its first-ever tournament title, was joined by
Creighton, which earned an at-large selection for the second
time in program history (1994). The Bluejays, a No. 10 seed,
knocked off seventh-seeded Syracuse, 61-56, earning the
league’s first NCAA Tournament victory since 2002. Wichita
State was the regular-season and tournament champion for
the first time in school history, carrying the best program
record in Shocker history at 24-10. Three teams – Illinois
State, Indiana State and UNI – also earned WNIT Tournament
berths – for a total of five postseason teams.
