The Rise of Graffiti

For a while now, our walls have been adorned by lizards, cracks and a combination of ageing and germinating spirogyra. But not anymore, a new wave is sweeping over the world and it has caught up with us on this side of the world. Graffiti, an art form once described as vandalism is taking the fore to redefine and shape public spaces in major cities around the world and Nigeria is not lagging behind. Cities such as Lagos, Uyo and Calabar are blazing the trail locally. This trend is partly influenced by the hip hop culture but not necessarily sustained by it. One that is here to stay, a breath of fresh air in our already congested public spaces, and a pleasant maze to get lost in when stuck in traffic. Residents of Lagos State as well as some other metropolitan cities have already become used to seeing these vibrant designs on popular spaces all around them, but graffiti, just like art is something we can’ t get enough of.
