The Rise of Graffiti

For a while now , our walls have been adorned by lizards , cracks and a combination of ageing and germinating spirogyra . But not anymore , a new wave is sweeping over the world and it has caught up with us on this side of the world . Graffiti , an art form once described as vandalism is taking the fore to redefine and shape public spaces in major cities around the world and Nigeria is not lagging behind . Cities such as Lagos , Uyo and Calabar are blazing the trail locally . This trend is partly influenced by the hip hop culture but not necessarily sustained by it . One that is here to stay , a breath of fresh air in our already congested public spaces , and a pleasant maze to get lost in when stuck in traffic . Residents of Lagos State as well as some other metropolitan cities have already become used to seeing these vibrant designs on popular spaces all around them , but graffiti , just like art is something we can ’ t get enough of .
