Ensuring Safety through BOSH
Consistent with the company’s thrust on
strengthening its safety standards, PMA launched
Basic Occupational Safety and Health or the BOSH
Program on March 2014. BOSH is a governmentmandated program on safety and health in the
workplace which requires companies to have BOSH
certified personnel through government-designed
training and evaluation.
The participants for the program need to complete
the 40-hour training in order to get certification. The
first BOSH training was held in Padcal. 52 employees
were trained on industry standard safety and health
practices and safety audits for issues of various
departments in Operations. They were also exposed
to the responsibilities of the Safety Committee and
were given an orientation on the appropriate
methods that address safety issues and the reports
required by government, specifically the ones on
Occupational Health Program required by the
Bureau of Working Conditions under the Department
of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
BOSH was initially offered as part of the EMP
program. To ensure a wider and more concerted roll
out to the organization and align the program with
the management safety initiatives, PMA partnered
with the Safety Committee in Padcal. Safety
Committee Manager Jun Leon Monterola sent 16 of
his team members to attend BOSH. PMA also invited
representatives from the Integrated Management
System (IMS) in preparation for the certification in
Environmental Management System or ISO 14001 and
in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or OHSAS
18001.
A follow-through program called Total Quality
Management (TQM) will be offered later this year to
guide the current BOSH participants. This is a
reinforcement tool to equip the trainees in
systematically solving safety issues. TQM will provide
scientific methodologies in safety such as
Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), 7QC tools, and the
Containment Action Plan: all these to ensure a
complete closure of issues that threaten safety.
