Q&a with R.a Dickey

The Benefits of Growth Mindset

wn with the knuckleballer to hear what his benifits of having a Growth

Q:

What do you feel your greatest success was?

A:

I feel that it was when I turned my failure of losing my pitching and turned it into a way to learn about something new and make me better.

Q:

How do you deal with a failure?

A:

I treat it like it never happened. If I let that mistake get to me then it can have a huge impact on my next performance. If I feel like someone is judging me then I just say "who cares" and let it roll off.

Q:

What was it like to learn the knuckleball?

A:

It was hard. It was a very difficult thing to learn to do after pitching differently for so long. I enjoyed it alot though, I tried to keep my growth mindset and it helped alot. It let me fail without feeling supid.

Q:

How did it feel to give up 6 runs in the first inning of your first game?

A:

Well it didn't feel good. But I really couldn't not place the blame on myself. Even if that was the easy way out I knew that I needed to take responsibility for it. If I took responsibility for it then I could learn from it and let it make me better.

Q:

Now that your a top level pitcher do you feel more stress to succeed?

A:

Well, I don't consider myself a top level pitcher but even after doing so well I don't feel any more pressure than I did before. I just go out and do my best if I have an off day I treat it like just what it is, a singular event. And I don't let singular events hold me down.

Q:

If you had the option to go back to your old style of pitching, would you?

A:

I don't know. I try not to fear change so if it was going to make me a better pitcher then I would go back.

Q:

Is your goal to become the best pitcher in the MLB?

A:

No, and it has never been. I just want to become the best at something I love. Instead of focusing on supeuriority I just focus at improving myself.

Q:

How did it feel to get your first strikeout as a knuckleballer?

A:

It was awesome, it let me know that I had succeded in learning something new. It was a major confidence boost.
