Dr. M. Michele Blackwood ST. BARNABAS MEDICAL CENTER | 200 SOUTH ORANGE AVE., SUITE 102 | LIVINGSTON | (973) 322-7020 | WWW.BARNABASHEALTH.ORG OVERSEEING 75% OF BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSES IN NEW JERSEY, THE SURGEONS AT ST. BARNABAS MEDICAL CENTER’S BREAST Health and Diseases Management Group take a total team approach. As Director of the group of five surgeons, Dr. M. Michele Blackwood is a strong believer that successful outcomes occur through the personalization of breast cancer care involving everyone from the medical oncologist to geneticist to plastic surgeon to nutritionist. Diagnosed with a medical problem at a young age, Dr. Blackwood was astounded by the small number of women in medicine. She was determined to follow in the footsteps of her father, a famous infectious disease specialist with a gentle and loving demeanor. Becoming fascinated with surgery during her third year at the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Blackwood chose a path where she felt she could provide comfort and a more personal level of treatment as a female physician. In addition to her total team approach, Dr. Blackwood is a strong advocate of education. “As a surgeon, mother, daughter and sister, I value knowledge. With all the medical strides, it’s an exciting time to be a physician and provide patient’s with information to make the best choices for themselves and their loved ones,” says Dr. Blackwood. Today, Dr. Blackwood is particularly proud of the work her group is doing with genetic mutations, helping to prevent cancer in patients who might be predisposed to the disease as well as new surgical procedures for reducing patient’s lymphedema or swelling that generally occurs under the arms as part of cancer treatment. Dr. Blackwood completed her internship and residency at The Stamford Hospital, and a fellowship with the Breast Service from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Her various academic appointments include Clinical Instructor, New York Medical College and Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery, Columbia University. Dr. Blackwood has published several articles in professional publications and is a frequent guest on national and local media programs. She is a member of the Women’s Board of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the Medical Advisory Board of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Bruce S.
