Central Nurseries has grown from a simple small landscape business started by an eager and hard-working Italian immigrant to become an award-winning full service multi divisional landscape company, with an active fourth generation of family employees. From its Johnston headquarters and its nursery in Chepachet, Central Nurseries serves homeowners, businesses and municipalities throughout the region. Similar to how a timeless landscape isn’ t about resisting change, Central Nurseries has evolved over the past ninety years to include a wide range of products and services such as landscape design, installation, maintenance, irrigation, landscape lighting and commercial interior plant displays. The company continues to honor its founding values of quality and service, proudly shaping outdoor spaces and communities across Rhode Island and beyond.

Central Nurseries( originally A. Pagliarini & Sons), planting the roots of a family business built on hard work, resilience and a passion for landscaping.

The company became innovative in the hydroseeding process to answer the call to revegetate the growing interstate highway system. It remains one of the leading hydroseed contractors and suppliers in the region.

1967 1990 2026

The‘ Mario Pagliarini’ Rhododendron became internationally recognized.

Nine decades after its founding, Central Nurseries remains family owned and operated. An active fourth generation continues to shape landscapes, support communities and carry forward a legacy built on dedication, quality and pride.

1953

The second generation stepped in as Mario Pagliarini became president, expanding the company’ s reach and carrying forward his father’ s commitment to craftsmanship, service and trusted relationships.

1980 2006

With the passing of Mario, the third generation— Paul, Steven and James— strived to bring new energy and vision while strengthening Central Nurseries’ reputation as one of New England’ s most respected landscape companies.

Celebrating seventy years, Central Nurseries expanded into site construction, marking a bold new chapter and positioning the company for continued growth across larger, more complex regional projects.
