Recent high school graduate dies in shooting By SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] An 18-year-old New Windsor resident died of a gunshot wound last week, two months after he graduated from Newburgh Free Academy. Responding to reports of shots fired around 11 p.m. on Aug. 30, city police found Keyshan Gayle at Fullerton and Third Street with a gunshot wound to his back. He was transported to nearby St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have ruled the shooting a homicide. “I am absolutely horrified that another promising young person has been taken from us too soon,” Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney said in a statement shortly after the shooting. “Keyshan had just graduated and was preparing to go to college – he was poised to open the next chapter of his young life – but he has been robbed of his future. My heart breaks for his family, friends and fellow graduates at Newburgh Free Academy. We must stop burying our children.” In June, Maloney called on the federal Bureau of Justice Assistance to immediately fund “Shot Spotter” technology for the City of Newburgh Police. The Shot Spotter system provides real-time information on shots fired using sensors providing data on time and location. City police applied to the BJA for a grant to purchase the system in April. The city has upgraded its surveillancecamera system, recently adding three, new video cameras to its surveillance system earlier this year. Anyone with information about the shooting may contact the City of Newburgh Police at 845-561-3131 or call the City of Newburgh Police confidential tips hotline at 845-569-7555.
