City hails an 80 percent decrease in violent crimes

On Thursday, City of Newburgh Police Chief, Doug
Solomon, held a press conference highlighting a decrease
in violent crimes in the City. The room was filled with
politicians and community leaders eager to celebrate the
safest year in the City of Newburgh in recent history.
“Congratulations to the City of Newburgh Police

Department on this milestone. I am proud of our city and
our partnerships at the County, State, and Federal levels.
This decrease in crime is significant to our revitalization
process. Public safety is our number one priority,” said
Mayor Torrance Harvey.
The department has seen an 80 percent decrease in
crime over the past three years. With the number of
shooting victims moving from 55 in 2015 to 8 in 2018.
Although the numbers show significant improvements
Solomon is looking to continue to push forward.
“The City of Newburgh is 100 percent committed to
continue to drive down violent crime while continuing
our efforts to gain and maintain the public trust,” said
Solomon.

The Newburgh Enlarged City School
District has three seats up for grabs in
this years Board of Education Elections
on Tuesday, May 21 2019. There are
six candidates on the ballot this year
with three incumbent and three new
candidates.
R. Andrew Johnston, Susan Prokosch,
and Mark Levinstein are looking to keep
their positions on the board. Carol Maida,
Shoy Coldbourne, and Shane Henderson
are looking to take seats on the board for
the first time bringing in some new energy
to the Board of Education (BOE).

Andrew Johnston has been on the board
for two terms spending 45 years in the
district as a student and as a parent.
Johnston spent years following and
documenting the work of the BOE before
becoming a member, to understand the
system of the district and how it works.

At the May 13 meeting the Newburgh
town board voted on a funding agreement
with New York State for the Danskammer
power plant project’s Article 10 review
process.
The Danskammer power plant project
is being reviewed by the state, which
means the Public Service Commission
supersedes the town’s typical land use
approval procedures. However, the
town wants to ensure that its residents
will be adequately protected, so it has
retained its own three consultants to
review materials related to the project:
McGoey Hauser and Edsall Consulting
Engineers, EA Scientific to review air
quality impacts, and Creighton Manning
for traffic impacts.
