A higher purpose Habitat Newburgh inherits Rockefeller Christmas Tree

By SHANTAL RILEY sriley @ tcnewspapers . com

It was Christmas all over again at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh this month when the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrived , packaged into dozens of two-by-six studs .

The Norwegian Spruce was donated for use in Habitat homes now under construction on South Miller Street . The wood will be used as non-load bearing framing .
The wood was unloaded from the back of a flatbed truck last week , looking nothing like the iconic , 94-foot tree that stood in the heart of Rockefeller Center in December .
“ We ’ re bringing new life to these neighborhoods ,” said Habitat Newburgh volunteer and board member David McTamaney , unloading the wood . Habitat Newburgh Executive Director Cathy Collins said she was honored by the gift . “ It speaks to the work we ’ ve been doing ,” said Collins . It is the third year that Habitat Newburgh has received the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree for use in home construction .
The South Miller Street houses are among a group of homes being constructed in a four-block stretch on either side of Broadway , between South William and Liberty streets . The area has become a development focus for Habitat and its RUPCO and Newburgh Community Land Bank partners .
When the houses are completed later this summer , Habitat Newburgh will have

Movie-goers should bring blankets and homes , the non-profit housing agency is currently constructing ten houses in the City of Newburgh .
