Project managers unveiled details on
a plan to develop three valuable pieces
of City of Newburgh-owned properties
at City Hall last week. The long-awaited
presentation offered information on
proposed funding, taxes and proposed
affordable housing.
“Over the last few months, we’ve really
listened to everyone’s concerns and we’ve
done our best to refine our project so that
it meets everyone’s needs,” said Karuna
Mehta, projects manager with Alembic
Community Development, speaking at
Newburgh City Hall last Thursday.
Alembic proposes to restore the historic
Dutch Reformed Church and the former
City Club property on Grand Street.
Another portion of the $70-million project
includes building an affordable housing
development on a vacant, 1.8-acre hillside
lot along Montgomery Street at Second
Street.
“Our main concern is to rehab and
stabilize the structure,” said Mehta,
speaking about the plan to stabilize and

Under the current proposal, the City Club
will have 6,953 square feet of commercial
space along with eight, one to two-
bedroom apartments. “Our main concern
is to preserve the building from a historic
perspective and maintain original historic
features, maintaining those four walls
that are on the site now,” she said.

Republican Sakima McClinton is
seeking the NY 104th Assembly seat that
covers the Cities of Poughkeepsie, Beacon
and Newburgh as well as the Towns of
Lloyd, Marlborough and Newburgh. The
seat is presently vacant, having been held
by the late Frank Skartados.
McClinton, a Poughkeepsie native,
attended West Point and attained the
rank of Army Captain during her service
in the Iraq War. She has also worked
on humanitarian
relief efforts in
Central America
and
presently
serves as the
first
female
Commander of
the VFW, District
2.
After
her
military service
Sakima returned
home
and
started her own business, has worked
to improve educational opportunities
for her daughters Roshauna (14) and
Jordan (4) and other children by serving
on the City of Poughkeepsie School
Board, finishing her tenure as its first
female president. McClinton continues
to advocate on behalf of children by
working with parents and teachers to
improve educational success rates and
has volunteered with R.E.AL. Skills, an
