AYD As the years pass and heroic efforts transition from the memories of the living to the annals of history textbooks, the responsibility to honor those heroes and their memory has never been more important. The Purple Heart Hall of Honor did exactly that Saturday with a heartfelt program to honor four heroic chaplains from World War II. It kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem, followed by an interfaith prayer, brief talk from hall leaders, a 30-minute film on the history of the chaplains and a ceremonial candle-lighting ceremony honoring them. Chaplains George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington were all veterans of WWII and were immortalized in 1943 when the ship they were aboard, the SS Dorchester, was hit by a torpedo and sunk by a German U-Boat. Poling was the seventh generation in his family to become an ordained minister in the Dutch Reformed Church. In fact Poling has a local tie, graduating from the Oakwood School in Poughkeepsie. Goode was a Jewish rabbi as well as an outstanding athlete and scholar. Like Poling, Goode had a family history for hol
