Amir Youssef ’ s Free Your Mind : Nat Turner might inspire onlookers to , “ find out more information about our heroes and what they stood for .” Youssef asserts , “ Nat Turner was an outspoken hero . Because of his free mind , courage and valor , his oppressors silenced him .”
Joseph Alix-Gauchier ’ s L ’ espérance ( translation Hope ) drew inspiration after seeing Hurricane Matthew ’ s destruction in Haiti . Alix-Gauchier notes , “ I saw pictures of the destruction and people trying to put the pieces together . There were people with hope in their faces despite the circumstances . My piece is about hope .”
Chivas Davis ’ s Lemon Iced Tea reflects his life and loved ones . The Booker T . Washington High School art instructor reveals , “ I create portraits that depict what I see around me .
I know so many people that drink tea including my wife and students . I also liked that tea is versatile .” Davis hopes to practice what he teaches .
