Amped up by the already dazzling matches, the All Tool Legion took the field against a likewise hyper Silver Spring House Heavyweights. Both sides were clearly eager to play in this final game of Opening Day; it would prove to be a fast, physical match. Would the Heavyweights, a team starting the season with a few key injuries, be able to hold off against the full strength and might of the Legion?
Silver Spring House struck first and gained an early lead due largely to a few untimely Legion penalties. Both sides were streaking towards play, and the Heavyweights capitalized on the Legion’s over-exuberance. Passing and teamwork were key as both sides played incredibly close to their respective marks.
All Tool Rookie Keary Maraccini embodied the Legion defense - trading an injured hand for a saved goal. As the half waned on, Heavyweight captain Joel Ingebrigtson built a fairly comfortable lead by taking advantage of each free and 65 awarded to his team. Points, not goals were the determining factor.
If the first half was determined by Silver Spring House’s fast, clean play, the second half would be tested by All Tool’s drive and heart. Ramping up their already exuberant play to maniacal levels, the Legion were on the war path. Second year player, Legionnaire Ron “Burgundy” Berghaus, closed the gap with a key point followed quickly by a goal from Legion Rookie Matt Corr.
All Tool’s zealous comeback came at a price though - a yellow card and several other fouls kept the Legion from continuing their impressive momentum. Silver Spring House, playing a steady game, took advantage of their foe’s misfortune and managed to secure a tight win with a final score of 1-10 (13) to 2-6 (12).
