If for no other reason , this would suggest that MSNBC erred in dismissing Reid , a longtime Trump watchdog who routinely called him to account on her weeknight show .
Born Joy-Ann Lomena on December 8 , 1968 , in the Brooklyn section of New York City . Reid is the daughter of immigrants . Her father came to the United States from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and her mother migrated here from Guyana .
As a young girl , Reid suffered the trauma of her parents ’ divorce and then the loss of her mother to cancer . She attended Harvard and a few years after graduating entered journalism as a morning TV show producer in Miami .
After the U . S . invasion of Iraq in 2003 , Reid left journalism for a while to work as a political activist , first against the war President George W . Bush launched in Iraq and then for the White House campaign of Barack Obama .
Reid joined MSNBC in 2014 . Over the next decade she became one of the most powerful and incisive Black voices in the media . Her presence on MSNBC ensured an endless flow of Black newsmakers onto the cable network .
But in the wake of MSNBC ’ s declining viewership following Trump ’ s election to a second presidential term in November 2024 , Reid became the most prominent MSNBC host to be fired from the progressive-leaning cable network .
Reid told a group of supporters her dismissal had caused her to suffer “ every emotion , from anger , rage , disappointment , hurt , feeling guilt that I let my team lose their jobs .”
But , of course , it was Reid who was let down by MSNBC .
The sacking of Joy Reid came just two days after her MSNBC show received the NAACP Image Award as the nation ’ s Outstanding News / Information program . •
