Spektrum Gratton Air Invitational
Brian Borland has been in Queensland, Australia last month competing in a new RC Scale event. He shares his experiences with us here:
In February I had the good fortune to travel to Queensland to participate in what those who attended now hope will be an annual- or maybe bi-annual event, depending to a degree, on the enthusiasm of the organisers. There was an enormous amount of work done by a large number of dedicated people. It seems competition events are difficult to organize in the Sunshine State. This event had the biggest level of sponsorship I have ever seen at a model flying event. Fate decreed that I should come home with three embarrassingly large trophies plus some other goodies. I left behind a large box which I felt would more appropriately benefit someone else. I can only say that I was happy with my haul.
The Spektrum Gratton Air Invitational was a Top Gun style contest. This is not surprising as one of the prime movers is Greg Tracey. Greg has been to the last seven Top Guns, had a lot to do with the initial Temora Top Gun event as well as having spent some time in the UK in close association with most UK model mags. In reality, there’ s no one he doesn’ t know. He was pretty much responsible for getting Gwyn Avenell and me on to the Top Gun list in 2010. John Butler, who has accompanied me on a number of off-shore excursions for scale contests, was quick to put his hand up and so off we went to Brisbane. John is pretty much unflappable, is an excellent caller and model handler for me and helps with the consumption of any good red wine!
