NEWS FROM OUR SITES

Anoka
Anoka provides four sessions of test preparation for the Test of Essential Academic Skills ( TEAS ). This test is required to enter nursing programs and supports students in improving their math , English , and science skills beyond the requirements for college entrance . While this service is essential for collegegoing students , we realized that there are many nonhealthcare students who could also benefit from this program ’ s excellent instruction .
Understanding the program ’ s potential to offer a more rigorous opportunity to prepare for a wide variety of college programs , Metro North ABE decided to open enrollment to non-healthcare students . This decision has been highly successful , resulting in a 50 % increase in student enrollment .
At Metro North ABE , we see the consistent need for more education and believe that our excellent programs can often be adjusted to serve a broader community .
Blaine
The Blaine Learning Lab is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of its learners but recognizes that it cannot do so alone . We are fortunate to have partners who support us in achieving our mission . One such partner is The Salvation Army , which operates an emergency food shelf on the first floor of the Blaine Human Services Building .
We have established a collaborative relationship with The Salvation Army to ensure that our kitchen is stocked with a variety of food items that our students can enjoy during break time or take home after class .
Thanks to this collaboration , we can provide our students with healthy and nutritious food options , which in turn helps them to focus and succeed in their studies . Our partnership with The Salvation Army is just one example of how we work with community organizations to support the needs of our learners and foster a positive and inclusive learning environment . Being in the Blaine Human Services building has been a significant advantage for Metro North ABE , and together with our partners , we can help our learners reach their full potential .
Brooklyn Center
The Brooklyn Center school district wanted to build a stronger on-site connection with some of their multilingual parents at Brooklyn Center Elementary School . They requested that Metro North ABE - Brooklyn Center offer an on-site class one night per week at the elementary school . This project began last year and has continued with Brooklyn Center school district funding . Currently , the multi-level ESL class meets on Thursday evenings for two hours . Students enrolled in the class are also enrolled in Burlington English for additional practice online . The school ’ s bilingual liaison , Mercedes Charles , championed this offering and assisted Joe Foss , the evening ABE instructor , with the programming . Thanks to the Brooklyn Center school district for coming up with some creative funding to offer this additional class !
