Anoka
ABE sites located at Anoka- Ramsey Community College and Anoka Technical College are enjoying their largest collaboration to date . This semester , these sites partnered with 17 sections of “ gateway ” classes to help ensure that non-traditional students ( folks who ’ ve been away from school for a while ) and traditional students ( those who may need a little extra support to achieve college-level work ) have a high likelihood of success . It appears , with changes in the legislature that are pushing the entry point for colleges to a more advanced skill level , that the need for specialists to help bridge the temporary gap for students continues to grow . This has translated into changes for this cluster of Metro North ABE sites as it dedicates more resources to this cause and redirects certain programming toward the rest of the consortium to keep the English language learner community well-served .

Blaine
With Metro North ABE ’ s increased offering of classes online , Blaine Learning Lab realized that it has an important role to play in helping students gain access to technology . Every level of classes has an online opportunity . Classes during the day are available as a HyFlex model , where students choose to attend in person or online , and evening classes are all online .
|
However , students need the basic tools to access these opportunities . While many students access the internet through their smartphones , this makes reading a screen difficult and it is a challenge to engage in more interactive elements of teaching , like using class whiteboards and interactive technology . To meet this need , Blaine Learning Lab has created a Chromebook lending program . There are currently 72 students who have checked out a Chromebooks to increase their participation in online offerings .
While technology maintenance is not in the teacher ’ s manual , ABE continues to find ways to break down barriers students face in reaching their ultimate goal .

Brooklyn Center
Students at the Brooklyn Center ABE site worked online all summer long ! Brooklyn Center closes during the months of July and August each year , but this past summer , students were very engaged in the use of their distance learning ( DL ) platforms . The site earned increased distance learning proxy hours in July and August - with around 100 users and an average of over 7 hours / month of usage per learner . The distance learning teacher set them up well for success by meeting with every student one-onone to answer questions and explain expectations for summer DL learning . This fall , Brooklyn Center hopes to keep up that great additional at-home learning !
