Centennial
Centennial continues to provide for a growing community of adults living in five cities on the eastern edge of Anoka County . Teachers offer five levels of English as a Second Language classes in a combination of online and in-person classes — reaching students through a mix of locations and online delivery .
The cities in Centennial School district grew 10 % in population this census . As the cities continue to build new multifamily housing , Centennial is ready to rise to the challenge and match the need .

Columbia Heights / Fridley The Adult Education Center- Columbia Heights / Fridley ( CHF ) hosted an on-site event to assist eligible adult learners to purchase their own digital devices . Through the federal ACP , Affordable Connectivity Program | Federal Communications Commission , income-eligible individuals / families can receive free internet service and can purchase their own digital devices for a reduced price . This federal program is available through any internet provider ( Comcast , Verizon , etc ). However , for many adult immigrant learners with limited English skills , it is challenging to determine eligibility , register online for this service , or to navigate services . To help learners overcome these barriers , the Adult Education Center- CHF partnered with the national nonprofit , PCs for People , to connect families to this service through an in-person event at the school . |
The staff team that coordinated this successful effort ( Tanya De La Riva Blinova , Karalee Cin , Kelly Bainbridge , and Kathleen Moriarty ), helped to preverify ABE learners for eligibility , and hosted the event . A number of adult learners purchased their own devices , which helps them to more actively participate in online ABE classes , and to connect more in our digital world .

Elk River
ISD 728 ’ s school board recently recognized two adult basic education learners for their leadership . The individuals are role models for the way they are working toward their goals .
Meriyam is preparing to attend college in the United States with the goal of earning an architecture degree . She ’ s taking English classes at Handke Center and online , as well as brushing up on math skills for the Accuplacer exam . As she develops her skills , she continues to inspire other students .
Maria was a pediatric surgeon before immigrating to the United States several years ago . Through independent study , she is currently preparing for tests that she must take to apply for a medical residency . She has been an asset to other learners and the ABE program itself . When she ’ s not studying , you will find her translating for new English learners or helping them navigate through the new arrival process .

St . Francis
St . Francis Adult Education Center has formed a partnership with Isanti County Jail , providing important educational services to adults while they are incarcerated . Education for adults who are incarcerated is a valuable service that many adult basic education programs provide Minnesotans .
Metro North ABE has served Anoka and Sherburne county jails for many years . We are excited to add Isanti to our list of partners .
