Centennial has returned to in-person classes this fall offering two levels of ESL . Serving all of the cities in Centennial school district , this geographically large and growing school district is meeting the needs of the community .
Columbia Heights / Fridley
Classes continue to run year-round at the Adult Education Center- CHF in an online format . This site is entering its third year of offering online classes across all levels . The one exception is for the lowest English literacy level classes , which meet on-site . Teachers put in a lot of effort building their online teaching skills these past two years during the pandemic . And , students have also learned a lot about interacting on online platforms . We are all continuing to enhance online instruction as we strive to achieve a level of best practice online . Many students still prefer the online setting which allows for more flexibility with their busy lives and families . Very large , ongoing class wait lists demonstrate the continued demand for this type of instruction .
Elk River
The 2022-23 school year is shaping up to be filled with many new students . Our first day of classes in September had the highest number of students in attendance since before the pandemic . Many of these learners are very new to the country . We have seen a striking increase in Ukrainians joining family and friends in Minnesota and finding their way to our English classes . Our staff , volunteers , and other students are happy to welcome them to our school .
One recent highlight for us was ISD 728 including our ABE participants in a video of learners from across the district which was used to welcome back staff in August . Including ABE when discussing learners who comprise 728 was impactful for our learners .
St . Francis
There is great news in St . Francis . Maria Burnham has decided to join Metro North ABE and brings her vast knowledge and passion for ABE to the St . Francis Schools . She is looking forward to getting back to meeting with learners directly after serving as a supervisor for the Central Minnesota Consortium . “ I really just wanted to get back to teaching and when I saw this opportunity , I just thought it was too good to pass up .”
After graduating from Bemidji State University , Maria began teaching in Hill City and Grand Rapids . She moved to Big Lake and has taught at Sherburne County Correctional Facility and the Monticello CareerForce Center . She will be leading up classes for Metro North ABE at St . Francis and the Isanti County Jail .
