NEWS FROM OUR SITES
Anoka
The Anoka colleges continue to expand the math collaborative classes to meet a growing community need to support college students in their first college math classes , but they have also revived a vibrant GED prep program this summer . The GED program model is called “ facilitated learning ”. It is an online , asynchronous model that mimics a oneroom schoolhouse where , regardless of the learner ’ s skill level , the class meets their needs . It is a rigorous program for dedicated learners . Each student is required to regularly meet with their teacher to reinforce concepts , plan for future study , and coordinate testing . Learners build digital skills and work on strategies for achieving goals , overcoming obstacles , and other “ soft skills ” to enhance their lives and success . It ’ s a model Anoka wanted to transition to before the pandemic hit , so in this aspect , the pandemic mitigation efforts served as catalysts to a refined program . It ’ s working , too . In the past several months , Anoka has seen almost as many GEDs completed in their program as in the previous three years combined .

Blaine
One of the many strengths our staff bring to the Blaine Learning Lab is their flexibility . Our teachers have such a diverse breadth of experience that it allows us to redesign our classes to suit our learner ’ s needs . Over the last four months , we have seen a significant increase in new students interested in learning English at the second and third levels . In order to meet this need , staff are stepping up and restructuring . We are combining some of our higher-level classes and creating a new level 2 English as a Second Language class . We will combine our evening GED Social Studies and Science classes which will allow our GED teacher to teach another class . It is great to be in demand ! The more we can do to meet students ’ needs , the stronger our community will become .
Brooklyn Center
The Brooklyn Center site staff and students returned after the summer to an increase in enrollments . This site has been offering dual options to learners . Students can enroll in either an online class section or an in-person class section . Both are offered separately each day . This provides yet another option for student choice in our programming . Brooklyn Center has seen 83 % of students who were with us before break return for classes this fall . And over 100 students registered for classes as of September — which is huge for a small part-time site . Welcome back to everyone !
