Allan Akerman
"In recognition of an outstanding contribution to maintenance,
innovation and research in the minerals industry."
Allan has 35 years of experience in the mining industry and has
held roles with increasing responsibility throughout his career.
From 1977 to 2008 Allan Akerman worked for Inco / Vale in
Sudbury, and ultimately in the role of Superintendent of Central
Maintenance. He undertook Technology Introduction tasks and
supported the creation of the first VOIP communication
systems in an underground mine. Additionally he was
responsible for provision of support of underground equipment,
surface haulage (rail & truck) tracking and reporting systems. His role was to drive
standardization of maintenance systems through training, software, job movement and
specialists. As Superintendent of diamond drilling and raise boring, Allan fostered creativity and
accountability which lead to a business model that demonstrated sustained cost saving over
external competitors. Additionally he was responsible for the: Mines Operations Centre (MOC)
from which (4) automated drills and (2) automated LHDs in Stobie Mine and an automated LHD
in Creighton Mine were remotely controlled. When Allan moved to the research department, he
helped create the largest (70 ton) fully automated haulage truck in the underground mining
industry, and contributed to multiple additional equipment firsts in underground mining. Allan
became R&D Program Director for the Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation in 2008,
specializing in technology transfer, reliability, equipment instrumentation and mine productivity.
At the time of his retirement in 2015, he was Vice President of CEMI.
