S
et on a 1,500-acre estate beneath Colmer’s Hill, Symondsbury
Estate has been with the Colfox family for over 100 years. Joining
the renowned Symondsbury Kitchen is the Store, located at Manor
Yard and stocked high with award-winning local chutneys, jams, marmalade
and signature Dorset brands such as Colmers Ale, Furleigh Estate Wines and
Liberty Fields.
“We are currently at an exciting time at Symondsbury Estate,” says Marie
Clements. “We are trying to stock, cook and produce more of our own products
as well as championing local producers. Our award-winning chutneys, nuts,
oatcakes and preserves are made by hand in small batches using traditional
methods. It is an important part of our philosophy to use fresh, flavoursome
ingredients, by gathering or buying in season. We are passionate about the
seasonality and provenance of what we make. The café try to use Estate-grown
vegetables from the garden as much as possible or try to source ingredients
from local producers, as well as eggs laid on the Estate from our very own
chickens. We plan to start producing our own meat by providing lamb, beef and
pork, bred and reared on the Estate to sell from both the café and shop.”

A
welcome haven in Portesham
for those in search of sometimes
elusive regional brands and
delicacies. The location houses a farm shop
and café, so you can chow down on a full
English, high tea or a round of sandwiches
once the shopping is done. The selection in
the farm shop, though, is the real clincher.
If you’re a fan of Rude Health, Dorset Tea,
Norcotts Cider, Dorset Honey, Two Birds Gin
and Vodka, Jon Thorner’s sausages, Dorset
Knobs, or From Dorset with Love (to name a
few), you’ll find plenty to fill up a basket. And if
you want to stretch your skills and make some
extra dough, there’s even a Bake Club on the
last Tuesday of every month.
