NEWS Seriously good street food is served up in The Feast Collective marquee and around the site. In Tents Feast F 16 or two weekends in the summer some of the best globally inspired street food can be found in a field in Dorset at Camp Bestival (26th – 29th July) and Bestival (2nd-5th August), both held at Lulworth Castle. These two festivals are ostensibly about the music but they have long pioneered fantastic food across the site and in a dedicated area called the Feast Collective. The quality is so high, you might find yourself circling stalls and snacks you need to try in your programme rather than bands and DJs. At the family-focused Camp Bestival, the Feast Collective is jointly hosted by charcoal-based grillmeister DJ BBQ (see p.44) and Zoe Adjonyoh of Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, serving impeccable home-cooked Ghanaian food. Festival food offerings are as dizzyingly varied as ever. There’s great choice on the plant-based front with a vegan take on British classic pie and mash from Young Vegans and the Arancini Bros with wheat-free vegetarian risotto balls, to name but two. Seafood lovers can chow down on Shrimpy’s brioche shrimp or see You've never smelt why local fish virtuosos Seadog have won prestigious British Street country air as delicious Food Awards. as Camp Bestival's. Carnivores are superbly catered for. As well as the irrepressible DJ BBQ, there are hand-rolled meatballs from Melter Meatballs, authentic Japanese dishes from Oishii Yatai, plus woodfired pizza and street food from 2016 British Street Food Awards winner Baked In A Brick. Bestival will continue the feast a week later on the same site. The Feast Collective area there is hosted by author and key influencer Sean O’Callaghan, aka Fat Gay Vegan along with DJ BBQ. Their shared line up includes the flavour-packing vegan sushi from Happy Maki, Indonesian street dishes from Makatcha, buttermilk fried chicken courtesy of Butchies and Northern Thai treats from Krapow to drool over just a few. The variety is mouthwatering, the site is beautiful and the only problem is running out of eating opportunities before you get to sample everything you want. Eat Their Words Our favourite food book this month Fire Food Christian Stevenson (DJ BBQ) (£15.00, Hardie Grant) You can almost smell the smoke and hear the loud rock music when you look through this book from the festival barbecue star. He gives away all his slow smoking techniques, marinades and secret sauces inside but also starts at the beginning for those of us who struggle to light their barbecue let alone cook on it. It’s not all seared and smoked flesh either. Veggie options get a look in along with seafood, sides and desserts which take inspiration from fire-cooked food from across the globe. www.menu-dorset.co.uk
