he Roman god Janus, which January takes
its name from, had two faces – one looking
to the future and one to the past. Depending
on when you pick up your copy of Menu, you might
find we have a similarly split take on food and drink
this month.
With this issue straddling New Year, we have one
foot clad in our best going out shoes for party season
and the other in trainers for that healthy living we are
going to throw ourselves into come January. Just as
soon as the hangover subsides a bit…
The truth, backed up by more science than
countless fad diets, is that everything in moderation is

a sensible approach. So enjoy some brilliant cocktails
created by talented bartenders using world-class
but thoroughly local spirits (page 22) for any New
Year’s celebration but check out some of our healthy,
warming recipes as you head into January (page 39).
Most decent places to eat out these days also have
