MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE
Domestic and sexual abuse is an issue that affects thousands of people , yet no one talks about the male victims .
According to the Office of National Statistics , one in three victims of domestic abuse is male while one in ten is a victim of sexual abuse . So why aren ’ t we more aware of male victims of abuse ? Simple . There is a stigma . The stigma is also stronger when a female is the preparator . Society has played a large part in defining men as strong and masculine , someone who can be tough and can handle anything . Men aren ’ t supposed to be victims . Men can ’ t be raped . In fact , male-onmale rape was not deemed a criminal offence in the UK until 1994 .
In 2020 , it was estimated that over 750,000 men had been a victim of domestic abuse , a statistic that seemed to have worsened since the pandemic . A study conducted by the University of Bristol revealed that of the 238 refuge spaces available for abuse victims , only 58 were dedicated to male victims . ‘ James ’, a survivor , told his struggles to the Centre of Social Justice , that as a male victim , who was being abused by his wife , the bruises on his arms weren ’ t cause for alarm .
