What is a Mental Illness?

A mental illness is defined as a serious mental illness/disorder impairs a person’s capacity to function normally and safely.

There are many different types of Mental Illnesses with many different categories. One Is a Functional Mental Disorder. This occurs as a result of psychological causes/trauma in which no brain damage is involved.

One Mental Illness under this category is Anxiety Disorder. This is a disorder in which real or imagined fears prevent a person from enjoying life. Symptoms of this include a racing heart, feeling weak/numb, sense of terror, chills, loss of control.

Anxiety can also result in a Panic Attack, which requires treatment, whether its through counselling or support groups.

Another Mental Illness is Obsessive CompulsiveDisorder (OCD). Obsessive meaning persistent thoughts, ideas or voices that cause anxiety. Compulsive urgent or repeated behavoirs that when done give a breif feeling of relief.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

This is a condition in which a person that has experienced an exterenely traumatic or stressfull event and eperiences severe and long lasting after effects. This includes flashbacks, nighmares, sleep deprivation and can lead to depression.

Schizophrenia is another mental illness. Schizophrenia is characterized by impairmets in the perception of expresseion of reality and my significantsocial or occupational dysfunction. A person experiencing untreated schizophreniais typically characterized by demonstrating disorganized thinking and delusions or auditory hallucinations.

Bipolar disorder is an illness that causes a person to shift moods energy levels and abilities.
