During the weekly collections
from the drop points, bars and
restaurants, this presents a
great opportunity to speak to
business owners on island and
get their feedback.
The team also teach diving
and swim lessons through
the Dive Shop, and they find
that these are always good
opportunities to talk about
the fact that what goes into
the sea eventually comes back
to us and our food sources.
When plastic gets into the sea,
the fish eat it and then we eat
the fish . . . it is a bad cycle.
For the team, it has been
great to watch the way
Montserratians has been
receptive to this entire
initiative. People would
telephone to request another
collection bin . . . sometimes,
not only one, but two! Lots of
people have been in contact
with them about various
events, both small and large
that will need collection bins.
People have also been good
about letting them know if a
certain drop point is filling up
fast. This is indicative of the
positive impact the project is
having on the island.
Montserratians in the
diaspora, who are already
used to recycling have been
great about encouraging
people on the island to do
the same. “The government
has talked about banning
single use plastic bags and
we would love to see this
happen! We still have a long
way to go with the project,
but it has been great to see
how receptive people have
been so far. We keep telling
people... It Takes An Island!”
