The Autonomous Systems and Intelligent Machines Laboratory conducts research on autonomy from the perspective of intelligent controls and dynamical systems . The goal is to develop intelligent machines such as robots , vehicles , and electromechanical mechanisms that can operate either autonomously , or semiautonomously in coordination with humans to perform useful tasks . Perception from sensors , sensor fusion techniques , communication connectivity , advanced controls , and learning algorithms , are used to create intelligent , coordinated mobile robots and vehicles . The lab also learns from biological systems and human brain functions , through signal processing , to mimic intelligent motor control .
