Cacophony: Harsh discordance of sound e.g. a cacophony of hoots, cackles, and wails.
A discordant and meaningless mixture of sounds. Ex: the cacophony produced by city
traffic at midday.

line)

o Indicates a shift or change in tone
o Can be used to shorten long quotes “unquenchable thirst, a fatigued body...' as
being part of the reason for his actions”.
o Can be used to make a person pause when writing speaking dialogue. “Eh….no
way”, said John.
