MEC Student Council 2020-21

Despite MEC ' s Student Council being online for the whole year this school year , it certainly did not stop us from getting things done .

The year started with a different approach with the Student Council 2020 / 2021 election . This year instead of our standard vote-in election , due to covid and time restrictions , the election ran as follows : two students of different genders put themselves forward from each class and were put into a hat . The election this year was based on random selection . However , each new member that was selected was dedicated to helping improve the school .
Over the last seven months , the student council went on to achieve amazing things , despite the current global climate . We held many events organised by members of the council , such as a celebration of International Women ' s Day , organised by Karen Gill as well as other members .
As well as this , we spread awareness on environmental issues such as climate change , reducing waste , the growing issue of fast fashion , as well as how changing your diet to less meat will help with climate change . Posters that were posted around both schools were organised by student council members .
Along with we these events , the sixth-year members of the student council linked in with managment on behalf of their fellow sixth-year pupils , for the cancellation of the mocks . Many students felt that having the mocks so close after their return to in-person schooling was an unnecessary amount of added stress to sixth-year students . It went back and forth for a while , but eventually , the mocks were cancelled . The student council also helped management with making decisions on things such as finalising PE uniform design .
The Student Council as always is a great achievement for many and has proven to help with branching out , making new friends , learning how to find your voice and how to be more confident when fighting about things you believe in . Student council teaches young people incredible leadership skills , that will stick with them for life .
If any of these things sound right for you , then make sure to run next year for a place on the Student Council to represent your year group . Elections take place in September of the new school year . Don ’ t miss out on an experience you will never forget .
