Kindergarteners Get New Pets: Snails!
by Jim DeCarle
Reading Coordinator
Kindergarten students had the opportunity to study land snails up close in science class. Although a few students were a little hesitant at first about handling the snails, most were excited enough to pick them up and study them, observing their body parts and feeding habits. The children learned that the snail is an invertebrate animal (no bones) and has a slimy foot, mouth, two eyes on retractable antennae and a hard shell. They also learned the five requirements for all living things: air, water, food, shelter and proper temperature. They also
had a fun time playing with the snails.
In future classes, the children will be introduced to a variety of bones to highlight the differences between vertebrates (bony) and invertebrate animals. They will learn much more about animals, five senses and the human body
as well...
