As Manhattan Day School Eighth Grade students, we are participating in an Independent Study Project this semester. This project is designed to be challenging and will require self-motivation and independent work. We are being supported with guidance from our mentors who are part of the MDS

administration and faculty. We are learning to evaluate

sources, take notes, cite and organize information, write rough drafts and revise them into final, polished papers.

This past week Mrs. Fine took the 8th grade – 8B on Monday (2/24) and 8G on Wednesday (2/26) to Mid-Manhattan Library. Each group spent three hours with a talented New York Public Library librarian who was able to show us how to find sources, locate databases, and search for information. We then got the chance to explore the library shelves to find books about our own research topics. The trip was a great way to start off the Independent Research Paper. It was an amazing and enriching experience!

Thanks to Rabbi Zimberg, Ms. Neuer, and Ms. Spirn for joining us and helping make this visit to Mid-Manhattan a success. Eighth graders will gather together the technology, study, and research skills that they have developed throughout middle school to create a research project of their own design. Each student’s work must be documented sufficiently, and a series of deadlines have been put in place to assure a timely completion of the project.
