The seminar‘ Presenting Music alongside Visual Arts in Museums, Perspectives from Washington DC’ was held 21 July at Mater Dei School. The particular museum involved was the Smithsonian Institution, which incorporates a very large number of museum displays and archives. Attending this inspiring seminar was indeed an honour.
This seminar, arranged by the Music Program of Mater Dei School and Silpakorn University, was presented by three knowledgeable and prestigious gentlemen, representatives of the Smithsonian and experts in Asian anthropological research:
Dr Paul Michael Taylor, Director of Asian
Cultural History Program & Research Anthropologist /
Curator Mr William Bradford Smith, Ethnomusicologist Mr Trevor Merrion, Anthropologist Through lecture, discussion and slides, all in quite impressive detail, these gentlemen shared details of Thai artefacts in the Smithsonian collections. These artefacts are of immense historical importance and great beauty. They spoke of gifts to the USA of 19th century artefacts representing Thai court music and theatre. They also pointed out the change in the type of gift from Thailand during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, a change to a more
