College news continued …………. Pupil Development Department Big “D” The Maritzburg College Pupil Development Department consists of three programmes within the school that cater for social and skills development beyond the formal classroom and sports fields of College. These comprise of Student Counselling, the Leadership Programme and the Careers and Tertiary Study Programme. The Department aims to offer an even more all-round education and 'readiness' for after school life to our pupils. It is headed by OC Brandon Swart (2001), who has been teaching and working at College since 2004 (and co-ordinates specifically the Leadership Programme). Brandon is assisted by Mrs Liesl Dos Santos, who co-ordinates the Careers and Tertiary Study Programme full time, and the school Counsellor, Mrs Rene Wulfsohn, heads up all counselling programmes. All aspects of the Department are taught in formal class streams to our Form 2, 3 and 6 pupils as well has having a full co-curricular branch that includes leadership camps for forms 2-5, leadership workshops and seminars, career aptitude testing, vocational presentations and university visits. We had a record number of stats, namely; 5 246 views / 32 comments / 321 likes/ 17 shares Herewith some of the comments: Narvaar Harridave: Big D’s “HEY YOU AT THE BACK THERE!!!” always a favourite of mine—index finger in the air. Ernst Louw: Hey! You tryna be a hero! There’s always room at Alex! What a legend. Erol Collings: What a legend and gee, 6 of the best was more like 20. Shaun Killian: Jeepers Mr Anderson….that thing still going??? Our Form 6 lesson taught each cycle is dedicated to 'Leaver Extension' where they are guided on a host of topics that, amongst others, include tertiary applications, basic finance and investing, entrepreneurship, career field exploration and CV and interviewing skills. The Department is housed in the specially dedicated Pupil Development Centre located above the boarder dining hall. The centre boasts the offices of the Department staff, a counselling suite, a careers and tertiary research lounge with a host of resources and IT access, two classrooms and a multipurpose workshop and function venue. College certainly has the all-round development of our boys at heart, and ensurie that they are equipped with the right social and personal skills to handle the life that awaits them as they depart as OCs into the wide world. Karl Wüst: Driving to College, all Anderson boarders coughing from the exhaust smoke coming in and big D shout “this can’t be as bad as the mountain cabbage you smoke”. Legend! Craig Allen Gemmell: Exhaust tied on with shoelaces. Heard it a mile away. Legendary. Qhawe Mthiyane: I’m telling you right now my boy!! *Big D voice* Ian Duncan McLeod: The Mambe will never die! Jeez, this brings back memories. The old 1 finger raised off the steering wheel greeting. Most of us jogging back to Scottsville rather than ride back to dorm in it!
