Officer Kenneth Collings was fatally shot while working an off-duty security job at a bank in Phoenix, attempting to arrest two robbery suspects. He had served 20 years with the Phoenix Police Department, including roles as a dive team member and full-time helicopter pilot. A U. S. Air Force veteran and military policeman, he was survived by his wife and mother. |

Officer Polmanteer was killed in a head-on collision with a van that turned in front of his motorcycle at N. 37th Street and Thomas Rd. Officer Polmanteer had been a law enforcement officer for 15 years and was survived by his wife and three children. |

Officer Hawkins was struck and killed by a pickup truck. He was on a nighttime undercover assignment attempting to cross a freeway along Frontage Road when the accident occurred. During his time with the agency, Officer Hawkins helped establish a hostage / barricade negotiations unit and was a negotiator in hostage situations. Officer Hawkins had been with the agency for 12 years and was survived by his wife and two children. |
On April 22nd, 1976, Officer Del Gaudio was killed while in the pursuit of an impaired and reckless driver. The officer collided with another police car and then careened into the wall of a home. His death was instrumental in persuading the State Legislature to enact the Unlawful Flight statute. Officer Del Gaudio was twenty-six at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife who was five months pregnant. |
OFFICER GILBERT RICHARD CHAVEZ EOW: JUNE 16, 1975
Officer Gilbert Chavez was fatally shot and his partner wounded while responding to a burglary involving two juvenile suspects at a Phoenix business. Despite being critically injured, Chavez radioed for help before dying. Officer Chavez had served with the agency for one year. He was survived by his wife.
POLICE OFFICER DAVID LEE " STAR " JOHNSON EOW: FEBRUARY 22, 1976
Officer Star Johnson was fatally shot by an off-duty city detective during an argument after Johnson stopped the detective’ s friend for a traffic violation. The detective fired five shots, killing Johnson. Officer Johnson was a U. S. Army veteran and served in law enforcement for at least seven years. He was survived by his aunt and uncle.

K-9 BANE EOW: APRIL 17, 2018
K9 Bane was killed while attempting to apprehend a suspect following a carjacking and vehicle pursuit in Phoenix. After the suspects crashed and fled, one was caught immediately. The other was found hiding in an attic, where Bane was deployed and killed during the apprehension. The exact cause of death is still unknown. Bane had served with the Phoenix Police Department for two years.
K-9 HUNTER EOW: APRIL 17, 1996
On April 17, 1996, K9 Hunter was shot and killed while apprehending a suspect, Jackson James Doss. Despite being shot five times, Hunter ' s actions likely prevented serious harm to nearby officers. During his service, Hunter completed 686 searches, 94 felony arrests, and was instrumental in uncovering key evidence. He was the first canine to receive the Canine Medal of Honor.
