On February 26 , volunteers , members and spouses from the Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania ( DSWP ), residents and staff of the Children ’ s Hospital , and dental students from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine came together to host a NCDHM event at the Children ’ s Museum of Pittsburgh .
DSWP member dentists Drs . Alene D ’ Alesio , Michael Gans , Michael Hanna , Alison King , Craig McKenzie and Denny Zabelsky , and spouse Mrs . Marilyn Zabelsky were part of the event team . Dr . Cynthia Schuler volunteered with prep work behind-the-scenes and Dr . Alene D ’ Alesio of the Children ’ s Hospital chaired the event .
These volunteers presented a children ’ s puppet show , reviewed healthy diet choices with kids , and instructed the youngsters on the proper way to brush and floss their teeth . More than 100 children participated and received toothbrushes , coloring pages and NCDHM posters to take home .
A new special addition to the event this year were 89 handmade tooth pillows crafted by Cheryll Webber , a dental assistant and NCDHM chair at the Children ’ s Hospital . The children loved the pillows and were excited to take them home . The DSWP hopes to expand next year ’ s event to be more accessible and include more children .
