NATIONAL RESCUE DOG DAY - MAY 20th

In May of 2018 , author Lisa Wiehebrink started National Rescue Dog Day to raise awareness about all the dogs in shelters in need of loving homes . Every year , more than 3 million dogs end up in shelters . The majority are there due to overpopulation , caused by accidental breeding of animals that are not spayed or neutered . The number of shelter dogs that get euthanized annually is staggering , at nearly 400,000 ! Shelters labeled as " no kill " aim to get at least 90 % of the animals they take in adopted . Sadly , less adoptable animals make up the other 10 % that get euthanized . Adopting a shelter dog makes space for other dogs that need to be rescued .
Some people are hesitant to adopt a dog from a shelter because they assume it was surrendered for behavior issues . In most cases , dogs get surrendered due to no fault of their own . Some of the top reasons pets get surrendered are : * Owner is moving * No time for the dog * Divorce * Financial reasons * Landlord won ' t allow pets * Allergies * New baby * Too many pets in the house * Personal problems * Pet illness * Unwanted litters .
Of course , some dogs are surrendered for behavioral issues , but a misbehaved dog can be blamed on owners that didn ' t properly train their pet . An experienced and patient person can train dogs like this and have a wonderful , well-behaved companion .
Pros of adopting a shelter dog : * Shelters tend to be more affordable than breeders . * Rescue dogs are often already housebroken and may have some other training as well . * You will not be supporting puppy mills . * Shelter animals are generally more appreciative for having a loving family .
Cons of adopting a shelter dog : * Rescues make you go through an approval process to ensure that the pets go to a good home .* Shelter dogs may have separation anxiety from being abandoned by the previous owner . * Depending on their past , shelter dogs may have challenges to overcome . * A shelter may not have the health or behavioral history of some of the dogs . Shelter dogs can make great companions . Even dogs that were abused or neglected will show their humans unconditional love . If you open your heart and home to a shelter dog , it takes about 3 months for a dog to fully adjust to a new home . Patience and understanding are needed as you establish a routine and build a bond . Take part in National Rescue Dog Day by volunteering at a shelter or donating money , food , or other necessities . Consider adopting or fostering . Spay and neuter your dogs if you haven ' t already , and help spread the word about how important it is .
