Clackamas County this year . Likewise , there ’ s no drought of things to do this month at the library !
For adults :
All month long we ’ ll feature a display in our lobby showcasing the history of Wilsonville . The Wilsonville-Boones Ferry Historical Society will present photos and artifacts from their collection , as well as a timeline showing Wilsonville ’ s development from a wide spot on the river to the caring city it has become . If you ’ d like more information , or to join the Historical Society , please email them at wilsonvillehistory @ gmail . com .
On Tuesdays in May our free ESL class will meet at 10:30 a . m . This class focuses on beginning English , but anyone wanting to improve their English may attend this informal class . No registration necessary — just drop in !
Also on Tuesdays — if you need assistance paying for food or child care , or are looking for health coverage , come and meet a representative from ODHS
( the Oregon Department of Human Services ), who may be able to help you . The representative will be at the library from 10 a . m . to noon , and from 1 to 3 p . m . No appointments or signups are needed .
Our popular PROFILES lectures will continue on Wednesday , May 3 , at 11 a . m . Taught by emeritus professor Bill Thierfelder , this online program looks at the life and work of Georgia O ’ Keefe , especially her marriage to photographer Alfred Stieglitz , and focuses on ten of her most iconic paintings , especially her representations of flowers , skulls and the beloved desert near her home in New Mexico . Our popular First Friday Films matinee continues on Friday , May 5 , at 3 p . m . This month ’ s film stars Tom Hanks and is based on the blockbuster book of similar name by Fredrick Backman . When a lively young family moves in next door , grumpy widower Otto Anderson meets his match in a quick-witted , pregnant woman named Marisol , leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world upside down . On Saturday , May 13 , at 2 p . m , please join us for one of our free Booknotes concert . This month , we ’ re featuring John Nilsen , a pianist who plays original compositions inspired by the Pacific Northwest . His music fuses new age , jazz and folk . No pre-registration is necessary — just show up ! Booknotes concerts are sponsored by Wilsonville Friends of the Library , a nonprofit organization operating the Twice Sold Tales Bookstore located just inside the library entrance . Also on Saturday , May 13 , at 3 p . m ., please join us for a spring-appropriate program : “ Gardening — Growing a Vegetable Garden in Containers .” If you think you can ’ t have a vegetable garden because you don ’ t have any actual garden space , local author Maggie Stuckey has good news for you . Inspired by the indomitable Victory Gardeners of World War II , Maggie will show you how to plan , plant and nurture a bountiful kitchen garden entirely in containers . Free handouts and a few surprises , plus autographed books available for purchase .
On Monday , May 15 , at 1 p . m ., super sleuth Malia will host Genealogy Club ! Join a growing group of genealogists of all levels from the Wilsonville area to discuss genealogy tips , tricks and research . These discussions are informal in nature and are moderated by librarian Malia Laughton . New members at any level are always welcome ! If you ’ d like to get out and enjoy the spring weather , please join us for our May Walking Book Club ! On Thursday , May 18 , at 1 p . m ., join us on a walk from the library through Memorial Park and back ( about 30-45 minutes ). We ’ ll be talking about “ Little Fires Everywhere ” by Celeste Ng ( or any other books you ’ ve been reading ). Meet in the library lobby at 1 p . m ., rain or shine .
On Saturday , May 20 at 11 a . m ., please join us for an exciting ( and free ) in-person Space Talk on the hurdles of travelling to Mars . If we are going to be serious about establishing a permanent human presence on Mars , the time it takes to get there and back must be significantly reduced . We have a rocket engine that can get us to Mars in three months instead of six months ! First demonstrated way back in 1972 , the thermal nuclear rocket propulsion system operated successfully for over 6,500 seconds ! What does this rocket engine look like ? How does its design concept produce so much thrust ? And how does it compare to current rocket engines ? Please sign up on our website .
For kids :
On Tuesdays , May 2 , 9 and 16 at 10:30 a . m ., and again at 11:15 a . m . please come to Baby / Toddler Time . Youth programming librarians Brad , Jo , and Sam engage babies and toddlers in interactive stories , songs , rhymes and play to help build skills for reading readiness ! Join us each week for more fun ways to grow up loved and wise .
Also join us on Wednesdays , May 3 , 10 , and 17 and Thursdays , May 4 , 11 , and 18 for Family Storytime at 10:30 a . m . The youth services staff share their favorite stories in their own creative blend of storytelling and early learning fun !
Play Group meets on Fridays , May 5 , 12 , and 19 . Drop in anytime from 10 a . m . to 12 p . m . and let the kiddos play with a variety of toys , as well as socialize with others . For children ages birth to 6 with their grownups .
Wednesday , May 10 , is an elementary school early release day . Please drop in any time from 1-2:30 p . m . for STEAM Stuff — Hands-on STEAM activities at the library . The program is designed for elementary school ( kindergarten to 5th grade ) kids with an adult in attendance .
The youth services crew will be taking a program break from May 22 to June 16 to plan for the upcoming Summer Reading Program . No programs will be held during this time .
For teens :
Teens can drop in anytime from 3-6 p . m . on Wednesdays , May 3 , 10 , and 17 for our regular Teen Drop-in events ! Each week snacks , prizes , giveaways , video games , movies , board games , music and more activities will be available .
