U . S . Cannabis Arrests Declining
Despite cannabis being legally sold in 19 states , more than 300,000 people were arrested for cannabis possession in 2020 , FBI records show . That arrest number may sound high , but arrests have been declining each year since 2010 as more states legalize medical or recreational cannabis use . In 2019 , for example , more than 500,000 marijuana possession arrests were reported , so the 2020 arrest numbers represent a single-year decline of 36 percent . In another sign of change , 2020 ( the most recent year for reliable data ) was the first year that cannabis possession was not the most common cause for a drug arrest . Out of roughly 1.16 million drug arrests nationwide that year , 36 percent were for possessing “ other dangerous non-narcotic drugs ” like cocaine and methamphetamine . Just over a quarter ( 27.5 percent ) were for possessing weed . However , a big caveat is COVID-19 lockdowns resulted in far fewer citizen-police contacts as the number of arrests for all drugs fell by 25 percent compared to 2019 .

Possible Pesticide-Laden Cannabis Leads to Recall in Oregon
Oregon regulators issued a recall for more than 22,000 cannabis concentrate products over concerns they might contain pesticides . The concentrates were manufactured by licensed Oregon cannabis companies under the trade names Bobsled and Quantum Alchemy , the state Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission ( OLCC ) says in a recent news release . The recall applies to 9,300 units that were still on the market and 13,600 units sold to customers . The recalled products range from jars of marijuana extract such as resin and distillate to vape cartridges and Rick Simpson Oil . The OLCC has notified cannabis retailers about the recall and given them instructions about how the products must be destroyed or returned to a licensed supplier for destruction . According to the release , the companies are cooperating with regulators in the isolation and destruction of the potentially contaminated items . Customers who have purchased any of the products can either return them to the OLCC-licensed retailer they purchased it from or destroy the product .

Study Shows Legalization Not Associated With Increased Teen Use
A new study funded by a top federal drug agency has found that state-level cannabis legalization is not associated with increased youth cannabis use . The research article , recently published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine , looked at data from three longitudinal studies on past-year cannabis consumption and frequency of use among adolescents from 1999 to 2020 in Oregon , New York , and Washington State . With cannabis legalization a continuing issue in elections , opponents have repeatedly argued that the reform would lead more underage use of cannabis , despite numerous studies contradicting that point . Now another study has similarly debunked the argument , with researchers at the University of Washington , Colorado State University , and Oregon Social Learning Center finding that “ youth who spent more of their adolescence under legalization were no more or less likely to have used cannabis at age 15 years than adolescents who spent little or no time under legalization .”
