Toad Lickers Urged to Hold Their Tongues
The National Park Service ( NPS ) is cautioning people not to lick toads that secrete an alkaloid that produces psychedelic-like effects in humans . It ’ s not clear if there ’ s been a recent surge in trippy toad-licking , but the trend is evidently common enough for the federal agency to recently issue a warning . The NPS noted in a Facebook post that it ’ s a “ toad-ally terrifying ” practice . There are several species of toads that secrete psychoactive compounds , but one of the most well-known is Bufo alvarius — commonly called the Sonoran Desert toad or Colorado River toad — which NPS noted is among “ the largest toads found in North America , measuring nearly seven inches .” It ’ s known for producing 5-MeO-DMT and another DMTderivative , bufotenin , which can create psychedelic experience in humans . “ It can make you sick if you handle the toad or get the poison in your mouth ,” NPS says . “ As we say with most things you come across in a national park … please refrain from licking .”

Cancer Patients Using Less Opioids , More Cannabis
State-level medical marijuana legalization is associated with a significant decrease in opioid prescriptions and use among certain cancer patients , according to a new study from the American Medical Association . The study , which analyzed data on insurance claims from 38,189 people with recently diagnosed cancer , found medical cannabis legalization implemented between 2012 and 2017 was linked to a 5.5 percent to 19.2 percent relative reduction in the rate of opioid dispensing . “ The findings suggest that medical marijuana legalization may have been associated with lower use of opioids by some adult patients receiving cancer treatment ,” says the study , which was published in the Journal of the AMA Oncology . Researchers also examined how the prevalence of dispensaries further affected opioid prescribing . They found that “ in general , medical marijuana legalization with dispensary allowances was associated with a larger reduction in the rate of one or more opioid days ,” particularly for those with recent breast cancer diagnoses .

World ’ s Oldest Weed Stash is 2,700 Years Old
If you ever wondered when or where cannabis use first began , there is a record that offers a date . The world ’ s oldest weed stash ever found dates back 2,700 years and its discovery was published in the journal Science Advances . The cannabis stash was found on a remote mountain plateau in west Asia , the Pamir Mountain Range . There , the discovery of a tomb revealed evidence of a shamanic ritual in which cannabis was burned in order to experience the psychoactive effects of its star component , THC . This finding also showed that the THC content of cannabis plants in that region was significantly higher ( though too old to properly test ) than was believed at the time . Scientists attribute the increase in the THC level to the stress caused by the altitude at which the plants were grown , some 9,842 feet above sea level . Although high in THC , this ancient cannabis cannot compete with the potent strains of today .
