NBA Further Loosens Cannabis Restrictions
The NBA isn ’ t just reportedly removing marijuana from its banned-substances list for players — it ’ s also planning to let those players promote and invest in cannabis companies . It ’ s part of a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement between the players and the professional basketball league , which is also expected to formally remove drug testing requirements for cannabis . Regarding the league ’ s broader marijuana reform , it would formally codify what has been the league ’ s decision to temporarily suspend cannabis testing the past three seasons . Many pro sports leagues are moving in that direction , but letting players promote and invest in cannabis companies would set the NBA apart as especially progressive on the issue . NBA Commissioner Adam Silver signalled in late 2020 that its temporary policies could eventually become permanent after the league initially suspended cannabis testing when players competed in a quarantine “ bubble ” in Orlando at the start of the coronavirus pandemic earlier that year .

New Way to Monitor Pesticide Exposure Found
A chemical analyst and an expert in micro-extraction at The University of Toledo created a more reliable , robust , and efficient way to monitor pesticide exposure and help protect agricultural workers , especially for the cannabis industry . Dr . Emanuela Gionfriddo , an assistant professor of analytical chemistry , and Nipunika H . Godage , a Ph . D . candidate in UToledo ’ s Dr . Nina McClelland Laboratory for Water Chemistry and Environmental Analysis , published research in the journal Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry outlining their groundbreaking method that can detect 79 pesticide residues in human blood plasma at “ ultra-trace ” levels ( parts per trillion ). Gionfriddo notes the legalization of cannabis in several states has led to “ inexperienced ” farmers exposing themselves to the harmful chemicals since those workers are less familiar with pesticide safety equipment and procedures as well as proper pesticide storage and handling . The pesticides selected for the study are the most widely used pesticides for cannabis cultivation .

Cannabis Users Need More Anesthesia
Legal cannabis in U . S . states is having an impact on the medical field when it comes to people who use marijuana going under anesthesia for surgeries . The American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine recently published guidelines recommending that patients undergoing anesthesia be asked about cannabis use — how much they use , whether they ingest or smoke it , and how often . The answers can help anesthesiologists know whether they might have to adjust the amount of medicine used to put someone to sleep . Dr . Jennifer Kollman is the senior medical director of anesthesia for UCHealth ’ s southern Colorado region and she says anesthesiologists are seeing more patients who are requiring a lot more anesthesia medication to get the care they need while in surgery . Asking a patient about their recreational drug use , legal or not , is something that ’ s always been important for anesthesiologists to discuss with patients and it ’ s necessary to the correct anesthesia level .
