WHICH MUSEUMS HAVE LEFT THE DEEPEST IMPRESSION ON YOU?
I have visited dozens of museums, each with its own distinctive mark on the memory. Among the most notable: the Picasso Museum in Paris; the Phillips Collection in Washington; the Pinault Collection at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris; the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao; the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres; and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.

WHAT ARE THE DEFINING MOMENTS YOU RETURN TO IN YOUR COLLECTING JOURNEY?
Among the works I am most proud to have acquired is Good and Evil by the Iraqi master Jewad Salim— a rare work that had remained out of public view for nearly sixty years. I bought it for one million dollars at auction in the United States. It remains one of the great treasures of the collection.
Another memorable story involves the Egyptian artist Hamed Owais. I had set my ceiling at seven hundred thousand dollars for his painting The Workers, but the bidding carried the price to one million six hundred thousand. Later, the auction organisers offered me another work of his— People and Fish— at a fixed price. I acquired it for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I consider it a stroke of luck.
DO YOU BELIEVE ARAB ART IS MOVING STEADILY TOWARDS THE GLOBAL STAGE?
Yes, it is moving in the right direction. Works by Arab artists have begun to exceed one million dollars. Samia Halaby’ s paintings are a clear example: they once sold for a few hundred dollars and are now highly valued. There are sustained efforts supporting this presence— among them the work of my friend Sultan Al Qassemi— and I hope the circle of those interested grows wider, to strengthen Arab art’ s standing globally.

من الأعمال التي أعتزّ باقتنائها لوحة“ الخير والشر” للفنّان العراقي جواد سليم ، وهي عمل نادر ظلّ بعيدًا عن الأنظار نحو ستّين عامًا ، وقد اشتريتها بمليون دولار في مزاد في الولايات المتحدة. ومن القصص اللافتة أيضً ا ، ما جرى مع لوحة“ العماّ ل” للفنان المصريّ حامد عويس. توقّفت عن المزايدة عند سقف سبعمائة ألف دولار ، لكن الحماسة رفعت السعر إلى مليون وستمائة ألف. لاحقًا ، عرض عليّ منظّمو المزاد شراء لوحة أخرى له بعنوان“ الناس والسمك” بسعر ثابت ، فاقتنيتها بمئتين وخمسين ألف دولار ، في صفقة أعتبرها

نعم ، يسير في الاتجاه الصحيح. فقد بدأت أعمال لفنانين عرب تتجاوز المليون دولار. ولوحات سامية حلبي مثال واضح: كانت تُباع قبل سنوات بمئات الدولارات ، وأصبحت اليوم ذات قيمة عالية. هناك جهود حثيثة لدعم هذا الحضور ، من بينها ما يقوم به صديقي سلطان القاسمي ، وآمل أن تتّسع دائرة. المهتمّين لتعزيز مكانة الفنّ العربي عالميًا

TELL US ABOUT THE PAINTING AL-MULATHAM BY AYMAN BAALBAKI.
This painting belongs to a series Baalbaki drew inspiration from— posters that were once displayed on the streets of the Wadi Abu Jamil neighbourhood in Beirut in the 1970s, bearing images of Palestinian fedayeen. At my father’ s request, the artist reworked the figure of Al-Mulatham with a sharper, more confident gaze, replacing the sorrowful look that had marked the earlier works.
ماًذا عن لوحةٌ « الملثّمّ » للفنّاًن أيمن بعلبكي ؟
تنتمي هذه اللوحة إلى سلسلة استوحاها بعلبكي من ملصقات كانت منتشرة في شوارع حيّ“ واديّ أبو جميل” في بيروت ، في سبعينيات القرن الماضي ، تحمل صور فدائيين فلسطينيين. وبناءً علّى طلب والديّ ، أعاد الفنان صياغة ملامح الملثّم » بنظرة أكثر حدّة وثقة ، بدل النظرة الحزينة التي طبعت الأعمال «
