Dr. Basel Dalloul traces his curiosity to childhood. Fascinated by science and technology, he was never content merely to observe— he needed to understand, which meant taking things apart and putting them back together. Radios, televisions, cameras: all were disassembled and rebuilt, driven by a passion for discovery. This early inclination led him to specialise in financial sciences at the American University.
Dalloul grew up in a household immersed in culture. His mother took him to painting exhibitions, concerts, and ballet performances, and instilled in him a love of antiquity through regular museum visits. Those early experiences left a permanent imprint. Today, he is the Chairman and Founder of the Dalloul Art Foundation( DAF), one of the foremost institutions dedicated to Modern and Contemporary Arab art in Lebanon and the wider Arab world. What he absorbed in childhood has since evolved into a vocation and a reference.
In conversation with Matahef, Dalloul reflects on his transition from technology to art, shares his vision for the Arab visual arts and revisits defining moments in his collecting journey— including his determined pursuit of rare works that have become cornerstones of the Foundation’ s collection. He inherited from his father a passion for collecting Arab art, a cultural legacy that has made him one of the most authoritative voices in the field.
HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY TO THE VISUAL ARTS?
My professional journey was varied from the outset. The love of learning— nourished in our generation by encyclopaedias— kept me close to many fields. Art was always present in our home: the walls were covered with paintings, and artists were frequent visitors. At the time, I did not fully grasp the significance of that presence. When I eventually took on the direction of the Foundation, it felt natural— my cultural background had prepared the ground.
During my university years in the United States, I encountered multiple artistic movements: Pop Art, Modern Art, and Street Art. It was during my time in Egypt that I deepened my engagement with Arab modern and contemporary art, alongside my father’ s project of acquiring Arab works with the ambition of founding a museum in Beirut.

يحمل باسل دلّول شهادة دكتوراه في القانون ، إضافة إلى ماجستير في إدارة الأعمال من جامعة جورجتاون في واشنطن العاصمة. وهو يمتلك خبرة طويلة في عالم الاتصالات والتكنولوجيا ، حيث أمضى سنوات من العمل المثمر محقّقًا إنجازات علّى المستويين العربي والعالمي. غير أنّ نشأته في منزل مشبع بالثقافة والفنون أضفت علّى شخصيّته بُعدًا آخر. فقد دأبت والدته علّى اصطحابه إلى معارض الرسم ، والحفلات الموسيقيّة ، وعروض الباليه ، كما غذّت فيه حبّ استكشاف الآثار من خلال زيارات المتاحف. ومن هذا المناخ الثقافي تبلور مساره ، ليصبح اليوم مدير مؤسّ سة دلّول للفنون( داف ،) إحدى أبرز المؤسّ سات المعنيّة بالفنّ العربي في لبنان والعالم العربي. وما اختزنه في ذاكرته منذ الطفولة قد تفتّح شغفًا ومعرفة عميقة بالفنون التّشكيليّة ، فظلّ علّى صلة

في حديث لمجلّة“ متاحف ،” يرويّ دلّول انتقاله من ضفّة التكنولوجيا إلى ضفّة الفنّ. ويتوقّف عند رؤيته لواقع الفنون التشكيليّة اليوم ، مُستعيدًا محطّات مفصليّة في مسيرته الثّقافيّة ، من بينها سعيه الحثيث لاقتناء أعمال نادرة أضافها إلى مجموعة المؤسّ سة. فقد ورثٍ عن والده شغف جمع اللوحات العربية ، وهو إرثٍ ثقافي بات نادرًا في زمننا ، ما جعله مرجعًا في الفنّ التشكيلي

كان مساريّ المهني متنوّعًا منذ البداية. فحبّ الاطلاع ، الذيّ تغذّى علّى موسوعات“ الأنسيكلوبيديا” في جيلنا ، جعلني قريبًا من مجالات كثيرة. وكانت الفنون حاضرًة في بيتنا. جدرانه مفعمة باللوحات ، والفنانون من روّاده
. الدائمين. غير أنّني ، في تلك المرحلة ، لم أكن أعي تمامًا دلالات هذا الحضور لذلك لم يكن انتقالي إلى إدارة المؤسّ سة مستغربًا ، إذ شكّلت خلفيّتي الثقافية
. أرضيّة طبيعية لهذا الدور
وخلال دراستي الجامعية في الولايات المتحدة ، تعرّفت إلى تيارات فنية متعدّدة ، مثل البوب آرت ، والمودرن آرت ، وفنّ الشارع. ثمّ تعمّقت في الفنّ العربي أثناء إقامتي في مصر ، بالتوازيّ مع مشروع والديّ لاقتناء أعمال عربية
