In 2019, MASC offered our 9th Awesome Arts en folie
program in partnership with six Lowertown
community organizations: Lowertown Community
Resource Centre, Patro d’Ottawa, Centre de services
Guigues, Ottawa Community Housing, Options
Bytown and York St. Public School. This program was
the third and final year of MASC’s Ontario Trillium
Foundation Grow Grant and we are pleased to have
increased the:
number of participants and community organizations
reach into marginalized communities
understanding and appreciation for the arts as an
effective tool for community engagement
community partners’ capacity and interest in offering
arts activities In the Fall of 2019, MASC partnered for the 5th time
with the Sandy Hill Community Health Centre
(SHCHC) to offer the Awesome Arts program. From
September to November, 200 residents ranging in
age from 5 - 95 created two murals, an original song
and music video, a drama production, a storytelling
production, a musical peformance and an animation
video. Creations were shared on November 15 at a
standing-room only Festival! Working in partnership
with SHCHC, Viscount Alexander PS, Ottawa
Community Housing, Christie Lake Kids and 11
professional artists, we are thrilled with the results.
MASC looks forward to continuing this rich
partnership with the Sandy Hill community.
Over the last nine years, the Awesome Arts program
has offered:
Over $500,000 in funded arts activities
1225 workshops to more than 2000 participants
275 performances at 9 Festivals and community
events attended by over 5000
Together with professional artists, Lowertown
residents have created:
82 videos (available on the MASC Awesome Arts
Youtube channel)
15 murals
7 pieces of public art
While MASC will be working with new
neighbourhoods to develop Awesome Arts programs
in other areas of the city, we look forward to working
with our Lowertown partners who continue to be
interested in offering arts programming in this richly
diverse bilingual community.
