The British Council International School Award( Intermediate level) is a charity partly funded by the government, based on building connections with other countries and letting children become global citizens. Previously, S3 and S6 students at Marr College earned accolades in German and French, linking language skills with the workplace. In the lower years of the school, S1 and S2 have French pen pals, with whom they share differences in their cultures and talk about their countries. Their pen pals, who attend College St Michel, provide more authentic context when learning French. S2 are working on their French music project where they learn about various styles of French music, which is sometimes influenced by Portugal and Africa. S3 had to record themselves doing various football drills speaking Spanish or French, the prize being a trip to Ayr United! They also had a trip to Aguilas, Spain, where the spent their time exploring and visiting historical landmarks and having fun at a waterpark!
On the International European day of languages there was an S1 assembly to celebrate the cultural diversity in the school, and there was a P6 transition day on May 26 th, where children from the Marr Cluster schools came up to have a day of Modern Languages. They learnt about Spanish and French festivals and the lifestyles and cultures of different European countries.
Overall, this has been a great opportunity for the students to experience different cultures and lifestyles!
