I’m not sure that we can put it in to a definitive category, especially as in today's modern society, love can really mean almost anything. One way to understand love that has rung true for me is the idea of the 5 Love Languages. You may have heard of the New York Times Best Selling book by Gary Chapman - The 5 Love Languages - The Secret To Love That Lasts. Basically, his idea is that we all perceive the feeling of love in a different way, so it’s about understanding what makes you feel loved and how others feel love. He has split the languages into 5 different groups… Affirmation, Service, Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch. One or more of these acts will ring true for each individual, meaning that by giving or receiving this act, a feeling of love will resonate. For example, words of Affirmation and Service are acts of love that would give me the sense that I am appreciated and cherished, whereas my husband would find that Physical Touch and Quality Time shows him how much I love him. We tend to express our own love languages to those we care about, but for that other person to feel the warmth of love, it’s actually their love language that needs to be understood and expressed. There is no sense in expressing affirmation by telling someone how amazing or wonderful they are, when for them, touch is their love language, and the act of a warm embrace or gentle shoulder rub is what really affirms the feeling of love. By communicating and understanding our own and others love languages, it can put us in a better place to keep love thriving. February is LOVE month, so get our there and spread it, the world needs as much love as it can get!
