THE KINDEST CUT
Winter is a useful time to tackle pruning while many deciduous plants are dormant and their structure is easier to see. Start by removing dead or damaged branches, followed by branches that rub against one another or make the centre of the plant overly congested. Pruning can also help manage growth and encourage better flowering or fruit production, although the requirements differ between plants. Most importantly, use the right tool for the job. Secateurs are ideal for smaller stems and shoots, while thicker branches call for a pruning saw. Sharp, clean tools make neater cuts and make the job easier.
