Succulents need brighter conditions than ferns and fittonias, but even an open glass terrarium should be introduced to stronger sunlight carefully. A sheltered stoep with good morning light can be far safer than baking afternoon sun.

If plants become long, pale and stretched, they may be looking for more light. If leaves scorch or bleach, the position may be too hot or bright.

A little maintenance goes a long way

The appeal of a terrarium is that it should not become anoter demanding gardening job. Remove yellow or dead leaves as soon as you see them. This is particularly important in humid closed containers, where decaying material can encourage mould.

Trim plants when they begin crowding their neighbours or pressing against the glass. Wipe the inside of the container occasionally if it becomes dirty, and rotate an open display every now and again if all the plants are leaning towards the light.

Avoid the temptation to fertilise a closed terrarium heavily. You are not trying to produce rampant growth, you want compact plants that stay in balance with their tiny environment.

Most importantly, observe before doing anything. A terrarium is often happiest when its gardener interferes as little as possible.
