One of Kirkwood ’ s citrus farmers who makes a remarkable contribution to South Africa ’ s exports , is Bernol Farming ’ s Adrian Walton on his farms Bernol and Lupus Den .
Adrian : “ My family has been on this farm for 128 years . Initially , my forefathers farmed with lucerne and cattle . When citrus farming started , water was a problem . Those days they got water from what is now known as the Darlington Dam . That proved to be insufficient . However , during the 1980s the Orange River / Fish River Scheme was developed and we now have permanent water . So for us , water is not a problem like it is in the Patensie area , for example .”
With the availability of a permanent supply of water , expansion of citrus farming rose exponentially and Adrian was able to double the size of his orchards . All because citrus is the crop that does best in this beautiful area .
According to Adrian , it is firstly due to the local climate .
